The Bucharest Early Intervention Project is a randomized controlled trial of foster care as an alternative to institutional care for deprived young children. The trial concluded when children were 4.5 years old, but follow-ups have been conducted at age 8, 12 and 16 years, and an additional follow-up is planned for age 21. This presentation considers factors that have been identified to promote recovery and the implications of these findings for child protection in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Bio<\/strong>: Dr. Zeanah is Mary Peters Sellars-Polchow Chair in Psychiatry, Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, and Vice-Chair for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He also directs the Institute of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health at Tulane. Throughout his career, his clinical and research focus has been on early experiences and their effects. He is co-author of\u00a0<em>Romania\u2019s Abandoned Children: Deprivation and the Struggle for Recovery<\/em>. He is also the Editor of all 4 editions of the\u00a0<em>Handbook of Infant Mental Health<\/em>, and he chaired the Task Force that wrote\u00a0<em>DC:0-5, Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood<\/em>. Dr. Zeanah is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Psychiatric Association.
